Shingle Repair and Replacement in Edmonton

A few shingles, one slope or the whole roof — in asphalt, architectural and impact-rated, with an honest answer about whether patching is worth it.

Free inspection

Sometimes the right answer is a dozen shingles and a new pipe boot. Sometimes replacing a dozen shingles on a roof that is failing generally is money you will spend again next spring. The useful question is not “can this be patched” but “how much life is left in the rest of it”.

We will give you both numbers — the patch and the replacement — and tell you which one we would choose on our own house.

Edmonton market range, CAD$600–$16,000

The real number depends on pitch, access, decking and the size of the roof. Yours goes in writing after the inspection and before any work starts.

We call back the same business day. We never ask for payment before the insurer has confirmed scope, and we never offer to cover your deductible.

Scope

What the work includes

  • Condition assessment first. Flexibility, granule coverage, seal integrity and age across the whole roof, not just the damaged patch.
  • Colour and profile matching. Matched as closely as the product line allows. Weathered shingles never match new ones exactly; on a visible slope that matters and we will say so.
  • Correct nailing and sealing. Into the nailing strip, six nails where the manufacturer and the wind exposure call for it. Most shingle failures in Edmonton are nailing failures, not product failures.
  • Underlayment repair where exposed. If we are lifting shingles and the underlayment below is torn, it gets repaired. Putting a new shingle over failed underlayment solves nothing.
  • Ridge cap and starter. Both are separate products. A patch that finishes with cut-down field shingles at the ridge will leak at the ridge.
  • Impact-rated options. Class 4 products for a hail corridor, with a note on whether your insurer offers a premium credit for them.

Signs

When you need this

Any one of these is worth an inspection. Several together usually means a claim.

  • A small number of shingles missing or broken after a storm
  • Curling or cupping confined to one slope or one exposure
  • Exposed nail heads or lifted tabs along an edge
  • Isolated cracked shingles around a vent or a satellite mount
  • A previous repair that was done badly and is now failing
  • Granule loss concentrated below a valley or a downspout outlet

Insurance

How this looks as a claim

Partial shingle work often falls under the deductible, which means a claim is not worth filing. The exception is when the damage is only visibly partial: broken seal strips across a whole slope are storm damage even where the shingles are still in place, and scoped properly that is a full-slope job.

Matching matters too. Where the original product is discontinued and no reasonable match exists, Alberta insurers routinely approve full-slope replacement rather than a visibly mismatched patch. Documenting the attempt to match is what makes that argument.

How Edmonton roof claims work

Materials

Asphalt shingle types used in Edmonton

Three product classes cover almost every asphalt roof in this city, and the differences matter more here than in a milder climate.

  • Three-tab. The flat, single-layer shingle on most pre-2000 roofs. Light, cheap, and the first thing wind takes off a rake edge. Rarely specified new now, though it still turns up on garages and additions.
  • Architectural (laminate). Two bonded layers, heavier, better wind rating, and the default on new Edmonton work. Thicker mats also bruise less readily under small hail.
  • Impact-rated (Class 4). Tested to UL 2218 for impact resistance. Costs more up front, and some Alberta insurers offer a premium credit for it — ask your broker whether yours does before you decide, because the credit is what changes the payback.

What survives Alberta hail, class by class, is compared in roofing materials for Alberta hail. If the whole roof is going, roof replacement covers what a full system includes.

Costs per slope

What shingle work costs in Edmonton

Partial shingle work is priced by access and quantity, not by the square foot. These are published Edmonton market ranges for the common jobs, not a quote — your number goes in writing after the inspection.

Scope of workEdmonton market range, CADWhat moves it
A few shingles replaced, ground-accessible slope$300 - $600Steep pitch, two-storey access and an awkward set-up cost more than the shingles
Ridge cap replaced along one ridge$400 - $900Ridge length, and whether ridge vent is being replaced at the same time
One slope re-shingled$1,500 - $4,500Slope area, layers to remove, and whether the underlayment below is intact
Section of valley re-shingled with new membrane$800 - $2,200Valley length, metal or woven detail, and condition of the decking under it

Market ranges collected from published Edmonton price guides and contractor pages, not our quote. Minimum call-out charges apply to small jobs everywhere in this trade, which is why a $300 repair and a $600 repair often involve the same shingles.

Two things worth knowing before you spend any of it. A repair under roughly $1,000 will not clear most Edmonton deductibles, so it is usually not a claim. And on a roof past about fifteen years, the patch money is often better spent on an inspection-backed claim assessment that establishes whether the whole roof is claimable.

A straightforward shingle repair is a few hours. The honest caveat is that patching an aged roof has a short horizon: new shingles next to fifteen-year-old ones do not age together, and the seam between them becomes the next weak point.

On a roof past about fifteen years in this climate, we will usually recommend you spend the repair money on an inspection-backed claim assessment instead, and find out whether the whole roof is claimable.

Where the work is covered by insurance, the number that matters is the insurer’s approved scope plus your deductible, not the sticker price. We prepare the scope, submit supplements for anything missing, and you see every line.

Straight answers

Shingle repair and replacement: common questions

Can you match my existing shingles?

Often approximately, rarely exactly. Product lines change and installed shingles weather. On a front-facing slope we will show you the match before committing.

How many shingles can be replaced before it is a new roof?

There is no fixed number — it is about the condition of the rest. If the surrounding shingles crack when lifted, patching creates as much damage as it repairs.

Are impact-rated shingles worth it in Edmonton?

In a hail corridor, often yes, especially if you are self-funding or have claimed before. Ask your broker about a premium credit; some Alberta insurers offer one and it changes the payback period.

Where we work

Where we do this work

Edmonton proper and the Capital Region. Summer hail, prairie wind, ice dams and freeze–thaw cycles attack different parts of a roof, and our inspections look past the obvious impact marks to flashing, vents, underlayment and decking.

If your roof is inside the Anthony Henday, we are usually there the next morning.

Worried about what the last storm did?

Roof damaged? Start with the report, not the quote.

A free, photo-documented inspection is what turns a phone call to your insurer into a paid claim. It costs you nothing and takes about an hour.
