Wind and Storm Damage Roof Repair in Edmonton

Wind-lifted and missing shingles, broken seal strips, torn flashing and damaged ridge cap — everything the prairie wind takes off a roof in one night.

Wind damage is the opposite of hail damage: it is obvious. Shingles are gone, tabs are curled back, ridge cap is scattered across the lawn, and the flashing at a wall has peeled away. Because it is obvious it is usually the easier claim to prove — and because water gets in fast, it is the more urgent one. Which makes wind damage roof repair in Edmonton a documentation job as much as a roofing one: what gets photographed on the first visit is what gets paid for.

Edmonton’s exposure is real. The open approaches on the west and south sides of the city give wind a clean run at rooflines, and the gusts that come with a summer thunderstorm front do most of the damage in a few minutes.

The real number depends on pitch, access, decking and the size of the roof. Yours goes in writing after the inspection and before any work starts.

Free inspection and written report

Photo-documented, dated, and formatted for an insurance claim.

We call back the same business day. We never ask for payment before the insurer has confirmed scope, and we never offer to cover your deductible.

Scope

What the work includes

  • Emergency assessment. Same day where water is entering. We establish whether the roof is watertight before anything else happens.
  • Tarping and temporary cover. Fastened properly, not weighted down with lumber. See emergency tarping.
  • Shingle and ridge cap replacement. Matched as closely as the product line allows. Where a discontinued shingle cannot be matched, that itself is an argument for replacing the slope rather than patching it, and insurers accept it.
  • Flashing and edge repair. Step flashing at walls, counter-flashing at chimneys, drip edge at rakes. Wind finds edges first.
  • Seal-strip inspection. Wind commonly breaks the adhesive seal on shingles it did not remove. Those shingles look fine and will leave in the next storm. This is the damage most often missed on a wind claim.
  • Interior and attic check. Water tracks along rafters before it shows on a ceiling. We look in the attic, because the insurer will want the interior damage documented alongside the roof.

Signs

When you need this

Any one of these is worth an inspection. Several together usually means a claim.

  • Missing shingles, or shingles lying in the yard and the neighbour's yard
  • Curled or lifted tabs along the rake and ridge lines
  • Ridge cap displaced or gone
  • Exposed nail heads or visible underlayment
  • Flashing pulled away from a wall or chimney
  • A new water stain on a ceiling within days of a windstorm

Insurance

How this looks as a claim

Windstorm is a named peril on standard Alberta policies and wind claims are generally straightforward, with one recurring dispute: the seal strip. Insurers frequently scope only the shingles that physically left the roof, while the shingles whose adhesive seal was broken — which will fail in the next storm — are left out.

Documenting broken seals slope by slope, at the time of inspection, is what turns that into a paid line item rather than a second claim next year.

Wind claims

Wind damage insurance claim in Alberta

Windstorm is a named peril on every standard Alberta homeowner form, which makes a wind claim one of the more straightforward ones to open. Three things decide how much of it gets paid.

1. The date of loss has to match a real wind event

Give the storm date, not the day you noticed the shingles in the yard. Environment and Climate Change Canada publishes wind and severe-weather records, and your insurer will check them. A claim opened with a vague date is the easiest kind to reduce later.

2. Broken seal strips are damage, even where the shingle is still there

This is the recurring dispute on Alberta wind claims. Insurers frequently scope only the shingles that physically left the roof. The shingles whose adhesive seal was broken look untouched from the ground and will leave in the next storm. Documented slope by slope at the time of inspection, they are part of the loss; found next spring, they are a second claim with a second deductible.

3. Matching, when the product is discontinued

Where a reasonable match is genuinely unavailable, Alberta insurers routinely approve full-slope rather than patch repair. What makes that argument is a photographed, documented attempt to match — not an assertion.

The sequence a claim runs in is set out in how a roof insurance claim works in Alberta; the hour that decides the number is covered in the adjuster's roof inspection. If the same storm brought hail, the documentation is different again — see hail damage roof repair.

If water is coming in now, deal with that first: emergency roof tarping, and the 48-hour version of all of this is in what to do after a storm.

Price and timing

What it costs and how long it takes

Edmonton market range: $900 - $12,000 CAD. Market range from published Edmonton price guides, not a quote. Your number goes in writing after the inspection.

A wind call usually runs tarp first, document second, repair third. Getting the roof watertight protects the interior and satisfies your policy’s duty to mitigate; keep the tarping receipt, because it is normally reimbursed.

Where only part of a slope is damaged but the shingle is discontinued, we photograph the attempt to match and put that in the report. Insurers in Alberta routinely approve full-slope replacement when a reasonable match is genuinely unavailable.

Wind also works on the details rather than only on the field: torn step flashing, a displaced ridge cap and a lifted drip edge are the items most often left off a wind estimate — see flashing repair. If you are not certain which kind of damage you are looking at, roof repair in Edmonton sorts the eight kinds out.

Where the work is covered by insurance, the number that matters is the insurer’s approved scope plus your deductible, not the sticker price. We prepare the scope, submit supplements for anything missing, and you see every line.

Straight answers

Wind and storm damage repair: common questions

How much wind does it take?

Gusts in the 90–110 km/h range will lift poorly sealed or aging shingles, and Edmonton sees those most summers. Newer, properly sealed architectural shingles hold considerably more.

Only a few shingles are missing. Is that a claim?

Possibly not, once the deductible is applied — but check the seal strips before deciding. If a whole slope has broken seals, the real scope is much larger than the three shingles on your lawn.

The shingles do not match any more. What then?

Document the attempt to match. Discontinued product is a recognised argument for replacing the full slope, and sometimes the full roof where slopes are visually continuous.

Where we work

Where we do this work

Edmonton proper and the Capital Region. Summer hail, prairie wind, ice dams and freeze–thaw cycles attack different parts of a roof, and our inspections look past the obvious impact marks to flashing, vents, underlayment and decking.

If your roof is inside the Anthony Henday, we are usually there the next morning.

Worried about what the last storm did?

Roof damaged? Start with the report, not the quote.

A free, photo-documented inspection is what turns a phone call to your insurer into a paid claim. It costs you nothing and takes about an hour.
