An ice dam is a ridge of ice at the cold edge of a roof, built up by meltwater running down from the warmer section above and refreezing where there is no heat beneath. Once the dam is there, the water behind it has nowhere to go but sideways and upward, under the shingles, through the sheathing, into the wall and ceiling.
Edmonton produces ice dams reliably, because the ingredients are a snow-loaded roof, a warm attic and a long cold season. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s 1991–2020 climate normals for Edmonton International Airport record 211.3 days a year with a minimum at or below 0 °C against 274.5 days with a maximum above it, so at least 121 days cross the freezing point in both directions — that is the melt-and-refreeze cycle an ice dam is made of. The roof is where it shows. The attic is where it starts.
The real number depends on pitch, access, decking and the size of the roof. Yours goes in writing after the inspection and before any work starts.
Market range, not a quote · source: HomeStars Edmonton roofing price guideWhat the work includes
- Steam removal. Low-pressure steam, which melts the ice without damaging the shingles. Never chipping with an axe or a hammer, and never salt tablets, both of which do lasting damage to the roof surface.
- Emergency channelling. Cutting drainage channels through the dam so trapped water can escape while the rest is cleared.
- Water entry assessment. Where it got in, how far it travelled, and what it soaked on the way — insulation, drywall, wall cavity.
- Ice-and-water membrane repair. The self-adhering barrier at the eaves is the layer that should have stopped it. If it is absent, short or perished, that is the fix.
- Ventilation diagnosis. Intake at the soffit, exhaust at the ridge, insulation depth and attic bypasses. This is the actual cause and the only permanent fix, worked through on attic ventilation.
- Bypass sealing. Attic hatches, bathroom fans venting into the attic, recessed lights, and gaps at top plates. These are the heat leaks that melt the snow.
Signs
When you need this
Any one of these is worth an inspection. Several together usually means a claim.
- Thick ice along the eaves with icicles hanging from the gutter
- Water stains appearing on ceilings or walls during a thaw rather than during rain
- Damp insulation near the eaves in the attic
- Snow melting in patches on the roof while neighbours' roofs stay evenly covered
- Gutters pulling away under the weight of ice - they were usually full going into November, which is what the autumn clean prevents
- Peeling paint or damp along the top of an exterior wall
Insurance
How this looks as a claim
Ice dam damage is frequently covered as water damage on Alberta policies, particularly the interior damage. The pushback comes when the insurer takes the view that the cause was inadequate maintenance — blocked soffit vents, insufficient insulation, or a known problem left unaddressed.
Document the event and the damage promptly, keep mitigation receipts, and separate the emergency work from the ventilation remedy. The first is usually claimable; the second is an improvement to your house, and honest documentation keeps the claim clean.

What it costs and how long it takes
Edmonton market range: $400 - $1,900 CAD. Market range from published Edmonton price guides, not a quote. Your number goes in writing after the inspection.
Steam removal is measured in hours and depends on how much ice has built up. It is genuinely the only safe method — chipping breaks shingles, and salt corrodes flashing and kills the planting below.
The permanent fix happens in better weather: seal the attic bypasses, correct the insulation, balance intake and exhaust ventilation, and make sure the ice-and-water membrane at the eaves extends far enough up the roof. Done properly, the dam does not come back.
Why Edmonton roofs do this at all, and what to change over the summer so next winter is quiet, is set out in ice damming on Edmonton roofs in winter. Where the meltwater has already found its way inside, start with roof leak repair.
Three parts of the eave decide whether this happens again. The attic side is attic ventilation — intake, exhaust and the heat leaks that melt the snow in the first place. The intake itself comes through vented soffit, which is also the timber that rots first when ice sits against it. And the run that tore off under the ice load is eavestrough repair: a trough does not cause a dam, but a blocked or sagging one makes it considerably worse.
Where the work is covered by insurance, the number that matters is the insurer’s approved scope plus your deductible, not the sticker price. We prepare the scope, submit supplements for anything missing, and you see every line.
Ice Dam Roof Damage: common questions
Can I break the ice off myself?
Please do not. Chipping at ice on a roof breaks shingles and flashing, and people fall off icy roofs every winter in this city. A roof rake used from the ground to pull snow off the lower metre or two is the safe homeowner measure.
Do heat cables fix it?
They manage the symptom and they cost money to run every winter. They are useful on a roof geometry that cannot be ventilated properly. On a normal house, fixing the attic is cheaper and permanent.
Is ice dam damage covered?
The resulting water damage often is. Insurers resist where poor maintenance is the evident cause. Document it early and keep the receipts.
Why does my roof ice up when my neighbour's does not?
Attic heat. A bathroom fan venting into the attic, a poorly sealed hatch, compressed insulation, or blocked soffit vents will do it. Identical houses on the same street behave completely differently for exactly this reason.

Edmonton proper and the Capital Region. Summer hail, prairie wind, ice dams and freeze–thaw cycles attack different parts of a roof, and our inspections look past the obvious impact marks to flashing, vents, underlayment and decking.
