Roofs in Stony Plain
Stony Plain has a genuine older town core — roofs there date from the 1950s through the 1970s, on small footprints and shallow pitches — ringed by newer subdivisions built from the 1990s onward. The two halves need different quotes and, often, different arguments with an insurer.
On the older core, the recurring issues are age-related: shallow pitch that drains slowly, original shallow attic insulation, and roofs that have been covered more than once. Decking surprises at tear-off are common, and a second layer is more likely than not.
On the newer edges, it is wind. Stony Plain sits west of Edmonton in open country, and the subdivisions on the western and southern edges of the town have nothing upwind. Ridge cap loss and lifted tabs after a storm front are the standard call here.
Shallow pitch also changes what can legitimately be installed. Asphalt shingle manufacturers set a minimum slope for standard application and require a different underlayment treatment below it; go under that slope and the product is outside its own instructions, which is the first thing a manufacturer will point at if a warranty claim is ever made. On a low-slope core house the useful questions for any quote are therefore: what is the measured slope, what underlayment is specified for it, and how far up from the eave does the ice-and-water membrane run. A contractor who cannot answer those three has quoted a roof rather than measured one.
Typical roofs in this community
Shallow-pitch asphalt on the older core, frequently over an earlier layer; architectural asphalt on the newer subdivisions.
What fails here
Decking found at tear-off in the core, slow drainage on shallow slopes, ice damming, and wind damage on the exposed newer edges.
What we do
Roof repair in Stony Plain
Core-town repairs are mostly about details that have aged out: flashing at chimneys and wall junctions, pipe boots, valleys that cannot cope with a downpour on a shallow slope, and eave damage left behind by winter ice. On the newer edges it is storm work instead. Either way the question worth asking first is whether a repair buys years or months, because on a roof that has been covered twice the honest answer is sometimes months. Roof repair covers repair work, and Roof leak repair deals with an active leak.
Also in scope
Roof replacement and decking in Stony Plain
In the older core, replacement means a full strip rather than a third layer, and the deck is the unknown. Get the per-sheet rate for replacement decking in writing before the job starts, get the measured slope and the underlayment specification in the same document, and get photographs of anything that comes off. Roof replacement covers the replacement scope and roof decking repair covers the decking work itself.
And this too
Storm and wind damage repair in Stony Plain
On the western and southern edges of town there is nothing upwind but field, and the damage shows it: ridge cap folded back, tabs lifted along rake edges, and seal strips broken across whole windward faces while the shingles stay where they are. Hand-check the windward slopes, photograph every unsealed tab in place, and record the date before any repair is done. Storm damage roof repair covers the storm inspection and the wind claim.
Before the work starts
Roofing permits in Stony Plain
Two authorities again, split by the town boundary. Inside town limits the permit comes from the Town of Stony Plain — start with its Applications, Licences and Permits page. Outside them, on acreages and country residential property, it is Parkland County, whose Building Permits page sets out its own process. They are separate municipalities with separate offices, and a quote that assumes the wrong one is a delay waiting to happen. Ask the contractor to state in writing which authority they are applying to and what happens if the scope changes at tear-off. For the longer version, see How roofing permits work here.
Insurance
Hail, wind and your policy in Stony Plain
The policy decides coverage and it is the same wording on both sides of town: hail, windstorm, falling objects and the weight of ice and snow are insured, while age, wear and installation defects are not. What differs is which half of Stony Plain you are in. On the newer edges the claim is a wind claim and the evidence is directional — windward slopes damaged, leeward slopes untouched, unsealed tabs counted. In the core the claim is more often a fight about how much of a twice-covered roof the insurer will pay to replace, and about whether the settlement is at actual cash value or replacement cost. ACV against RCV explains the two settlement types, and How a roof claim works covers how the claim runs.
Roofing in Stony Plain: common questions
Town of Stony Plain or Parkland County - who issues my roofing permit?
It depends on whether your address is inside town limits. Inside, the Town of Stony Plain issues it; outside, on acreages and country residential property, it is Parkland County. They are separate municipalities with separate permit offices and separate requirements. Confirm your own address with the right office before work starts, and get the contractor to say in writing which one they are applying to.
Why does tearing off an older Stony Plain roof cost more than I was quoted elsewhere?
Usually because there is more than one roof up there. A second layer doubles the tear-off volume and the disposal weight, and it hides the condition of the original deck, which on a house of this age is frequently what the money actually goes on. That is why a low quote with no per-sheet decking rate is not a cheaper roof — it is the same roof with the expensive part left out of the conversation until the crew is on site.
Can a shallow-pitch roof be shingled the same way as a steep one?
No. Shingle manufacturers publish a minimum slope for standard application and a different underlayment requirement for low-slope installation below it, and going outside those instructions puts the material warranty at risk. On a shallow core-town roof, ask for the measured slope, the underlayment specification and how far the ice-and-water membrane runs up from the eave, all in writing. If the answer is that it will be done the same as any other roof, get another quote.
