Hail Damage Roof Repair in Edmonton, AB

Bruised mats, granule loss and split shingles, documented the way an adjuster prices them — because hail damage rarely looks like damage from the ground.

Hail is the peril that built this niche. Alberta sits in Canada’s hail corridor, the season runs June through August, and the damage it does is quietly expensive: the 5 August 2024 storm over Calgary produced roughly $2.8 billion in insured losses and more than 130,000 claims, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

The problem with hail is that it does not look like much. A 1–2 cm stone will not put a hole in your roof. It knocks the protective granules off and fractures the asphalt mat underneath — a bruise, not a break. The shingle keeps working for a season or two, then fails. By then the claim window has often closed.

Edmonton market range, CAD$1,200–$9,000

The real number depends on pitch, access, decking and the size of the roof. Yours goes in writing after the inspection and before any work starts.

Free inspection and written report

Photo-documented, dated, and formatted for an insurance claim.

We call back the same business day. We never ask for payment before the insurer has confirmed scope, and we never offer to cover your deductible.

Scope

What the work includes

  • Test-square analysis. We mark measured squares on each slope and count strikes, the same method the adjuster will use. This is the number the claim turns on.
  • Directional damage mapping. Hail arrives on a bearing. Mapping which slopes were hit and which were sheltered is what proves the damage is storm-related rather than age.
  • Soft-metal collateral check. Gutters, downspouts, vent hoods, furnace flashing, the air-conditioner fins, the garage door and the fence caps. Dents in soft metal cannot be produced by weathering, which makes them the strongest evidence in the file.
  • Mat-fracture verification. Granule loss alone is ambiguous. Pressing a suspected strike to confirm the mat underneath has fractured is what separates a bruise from ordinary wear.
  • Repair or replace assessment. Below the insurer's threshold, targeted shingle replacement. Above it, the slope is replaced. We tell you which side you are on.
  • Dated photographic report. Wide and close on every slope, timestamped, assembled into one PDF you can send your insurer without editing anything.

Signs

When you need this

Any one of these is worth an inspection. Several together usually means a claim.

  • Granules collecting in gutters and at the base of downspouts after a storm
  • Round, dark, soft spots on shingles where the granules are gone
  • Dents in gutters, vent hoods, flashing, the AC unit or the fence caps
  • Damage concentrated on the slopes facing the storm
  • Cracked or split shingles with no obvious pattern of foot traffic
  • A neighbour on your street who has already had a hail claim approved

Insurance

How this looks as a claim

Hail is a covered peril on effectively every standard Alberta homeowner policy, so the argument is almost never about whether hail is covered. It is about whether your roof was damaged by that storm, and how much of it.

Two policy details matter and both live in the endorsements rather than on the front page: a separate hail or wind deductible, sometimes set as a percentage of insured value rather than a flat amount, and a cosmetic damage exclusion, which mostly bites on metal roofing. Check both before you file. See how the claim runs.

How Edmonton roof claims work

A clear path forward

From storm to finished roof

  1. 1

    Call or send the form

We walk the roof, photograph every slope, and hand you a written damage report.

  3. 3

    You open the claim

    Day 1 to 3

You make the call to your insurer. We give you the report, the peril, and the wording.

  4. 4

    Usually 3 to 14 days

We meet them on site and walk the damage together, so nothing is missed or minimised.

1 to 3 days on a typical house

Tear-off, deck check, ice-and-water membrane, new system, clean-up, final photos.

Price and timing

What it costs and how long it takes

Edmonton market range: $1,200 - $9,000 CAD. Market range from published Edmonton price guides, not a quote. Your number goes in writing after the inspection.

After a significant Edmonton hail event, every roofer in the city is booked within about seventy-two hours and out-of-province crews start knocking on doors. The inspection queue is the one that matters: the build can wait, but the documentation should be gathered while the evidence is fresh and the storm date is unambiguous.

If you are reading this weeks or months after a storm, it is still worth inspecting. Hail damage is dateable by pattern and by the weather record, and claims are routinely filed and paid after the fact — within the notice period your policy sets.

The claim runs to its own timetable, and after a big Alberta front there is a queue for adjusters as well as for roofers: how a hail damage roof insurance claim works in Alberta sets out the steps in the order they have to happen.

If the roof is going on anyway, it is worth choosing the next one with this climate in mind: roofing materials for Alberta hail compares what actually survives here, metal roofing answers the question people ask the summer after a storm (steel does not bruise, it dents, and dents run into the cosmetic damage clause), shingle repair and replacement covers the partial-slope version of the work, and roof repair in Edmonton sets hail beside the other things that put a hole in a roof.

Where the work is covered by insurance, the number that matters is the insurer’s approved scope plus your deductible, not the sticker price. We prepare the scope, submit supplements for anything missing, and you see every line.

Straight answers

Hail Damage Roof Repair: common questions

How much hail does it take to damage a roof?

Less than people assume. Stones around 2.5 cm reliably damage asphalt shingles, and smaller stones driven by high wind can do it too. Age matters: a 15-year-old roof bruises at hail sizes a new roof shrugs off.

Can I tell from the ground?

Generally no, and that is the trap. The reliable ground-level indicators are indirect — granules in the gutters and dents in soft metals. The roof itself needs to be walked.

My neighbour got approved and I got denied. Same storm.

Common, and usually about documentation rather than about the roof. Different adjusters, different slope orientations, different roof ages. Get a second set of photographs and read disputing a denial.

Is it worth claiming if only one slope is damaged?

Compare the likely scope against your deductible, remembering that hail deductibles are often higher than your standard one. One slope on a large two-storey house can still exceed it. We will give you the estimate before you decide.

Where we work

Where we do this work

Edmonton proper and the Capital Region. Summer hail, prairie wind, ice dams and freeze–thaw cycles attack different parts of a roof, and our inspections look past the obvious impact marks to flashing, vents, underlayment and decking.

If your roof is inside the Anthony Henday, we are usually there the next morning.

Worried about what the last storm did?

Roof damaged? Start with the report, not the quote.

A free, photo-documented inspection is what turns a phone call to your insurer into a paid claim. It costs you nothing and takes about an hour.
